Wheatley Recreation Committee to receive municipal funding boost

The Wheatley Recreation Committee will be receiving a funding boost from the municipality to support future recreation projects in the town.

On Monday, Councillor Melissa Harrigan entered a successful motion to disperse $24,542 from the Wheatley Pool Reserve to the committee for future projects with no future oversight from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

According to Harrigan, the former Town of Wheatley had a fundraiser in the 1990s to build an outdoor pool in Wheatley. However, the town did not build a pool and the funds were brought into the Municipality of Chatham-Kent in 1998 and placed in the Wheatley Pool Reserve.

"There have been previous requests from this reserve in smaller amounts from community organizations such as the Wheatley Soccer and Wheatley Minor Hockey Association," said Harrigan. "The committee continues to grow which is really exciting."

The committee will have full leverage over the funding which will be used to provide municipal grants as well as other initiatives.

"This is money that was raised in Wheatley that's going to go back to the community," said Harrigan. "I really look forward to seeing what the recreation committee will bring as a result of this."
