Rise in local COVID-related deaths

The local death toll from COVID-19 continues to rise.

In its daily update, Lambton Public Health reported the death toll has risen to 96 since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

The health unit said the latest two deaths were an individual in their 50s and another in their 90s.

The health unit reported 66 new lab confirmed cases of the virus Monday, as well as 44 resolved cases increasing the number of active infections by 20 to 869.

To date, there have been 7,868 cases and 6,903 recoveries.

There are 15 active outbreaks, up one from Sunday.

Bluewater Health is also reporting another death from COVID-19.

Communications Chief Julia Oosterman said a man in his 70s was the 82nd related death at the hospital.

There are a record 56 COVID-positive patients at Bluewater Health, up from 41 on Friday. Oosterman said 12 of the patients are in intensive care and five are on ventilators.
