Chatham dog owner to pay over $24K in costs

A Chatham man will have to pay just over $24,000 in costs stemming from a dog attack incident in 2018.

Animal Control in Chatham-Kent said the 33-year-old man was convicted in court in November. During the attack, a 22-year-old woman was bitten on the arm by the animal, receiving significant injuries "when the owner permitted the dog to attack," according to a statement from Animal Control.

The woman's injuries required significant medical care resulting in some lifelong complications. This attack was also not the first incident for the dog in question, according to animal control.

"Animal control officers charged the owner in response to the attack with multiple offences under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act," the released stated.

As a result of being convicted at the trial, the man was fined $2,500 and also ordered to pay $24,000 in costs.
