71 new COVID-19 cases in London and Middlesex County

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the London area continued its march toward 500 on Tuesday.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 71 new cases on Tuesday after reporting 75 on Monday. The number of active cases climbed to 475, up by 30 from Monday. The number of active cases in the community has more than quadrupled in the past month.

Fortunately, no deaths were reported on Tuesday, leaving the local death toll at 255 since the start of the pandemic.

The London Health Sciences Centre is currently caring for 14 patients with COVID-19. That number up by one from Monday. The hospital says five or fewer of its COVID-19 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, 23 new cases were reported by Southwestern Public Health. There are currently 235 active cases in the two counties.

Ontario reported 1,429 new cases and five deaths on Tuesday.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said there are 385 people in hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 162 are in intensive care. The majority of those hospitalized are not vaccinated, she said.
