Two weeks after an elementary school was vandalized, Chatham-Kent police are investigating more graffiti discovered at a local high school.
Lambton Kent District School Board officials said that while the graffiti on the rubberized track at Chatham-Kent Secondary School was inappropriate and included profanity and sexually explicit images, it was not racist in nature.*
"Due to the nature of the rubberized surface of the track, the impacted area will need to be removed and replaced," said the school board’s Public Relations Officer Heather Hughes. "We are currently working with the contractor to get this work completed in a timely manner."
The school has temporarily painted over the graffiti to ensure that the track is appropriate for students to use in September.
"We understand that this incident has a direct impact on the community and we are committed to ensuring our students and staff feel safe and have a strong sense of belonging within their schools and on school property," said Hughes.
*A previous version of this story said a tip submitted to Blackburn News indicated there were racial slurs were spray-painted several times onto the track, but the school board is denying that claim.
