Theft investigation in St. Thomas leads officers to Chatham-Kent residence

Two Chatham-Kent residents have been arrested and police are seeking warrants for two more suspects after several thefts from commercial businesses in St. Thomas.

St. Thomas police said the incidents took place overnight on August 16, 2021.

Investigators were able to identify four suspects in connection with the case and that led them to an address on Bloomfield Road in Chatham.

When police searched the home, they allegedly found a large amount of property that had been stolen from the businesses.

Officers arrested two people -- a 25-year-old Blenheim man and a 40-year-old Chatham-Kent man. They were both charged and later released from custody.

Police are also seeking arrest warrants for two other suspects -- a 41-year-old man of no fixed address and a 26-year-old Ridgetown man.

Man under house arrest accused of speeding

A 31-year-old man who wasn't supposed to go anywhere outside of his home is facing a number of traffic-related charges after police pulled him over on Countryview Line early Tuesday morning.

Police said an officer on general patrol spotted the vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed and allegedly recorded it going 110 kilometres per hour in a posted 80 km/h zone.

Officers said the driver also disobeyed a stop sign.

Police pulled the man's vehicle over near Bear Line Road and learned that the license plates weren't authorized for the vehicle, the man didn't have a valid permit or insurance, and he is currently under house arrest.

As a result, the accused is now facing several charges and was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Tools stolen from shed in Wheatley

Chatham-Kent police are asking for tips from the public after someone broke into a shed on Chestnut Street in Wheatley and took off with approximately $500 worth of various tools.

Power tools, guitar stolen during Chatham break-in

Chatham-Kent police are investigating after someone broke into a shed on King Street East and took off with various items including some power tools and a guitar.

Police said the break-in took place sometime over the past two weeks.

The following list of items was reported stolen: a generator, a sawzall, a weed trimmer, a power washer, a jig saw, a drill set, some Snap-on tools, and a guitar.

The total value of the theft was estimated at $2,000.

Two drivers charged after crash

A pair of drivers who were involved in a crash on Kent Bridge Road Monday morning are both facing charges.

Police said they were called to the scene near Longwoods Road at around 10 a.m. Monday, adding that the damages were estimated at $10,000.

Officers said the driver responsible for the collision was charged with making an unsafe left turn. The driver of the other vehicle was charged with driving without a license.

Man accused of breaching probation by visiting Chatham woman

A 45-year-old Chatham man who was out on probation is back in police custody after he allegedly stopped in at a woman's house multiple times even though he had been ordered to stay away.

Chatham-Kent police said the man was released on probation in July 2019 and November 2020 with several conditions, two of which were that he wasn't supposed to communicate with a specific Chatham woman or attend her home.

Police said despite those orders, the man was allegedly seen in the woman's home several times this summer.

Officers arrested him on Monday and charged him with four counts of failing to comply.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing and is now set to appear in court again on August 25, 2021.

Man arrested for assault

A 22-year-old man is charged with assault in connection with an incident at a building on Fifth Street in Chatham.

Police said they were called to the "disturbance" involving two men who live in the same building just before 12 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers arrested one of the men, charged him with assault, and later released him with a future court date.
