UPDATE: Casualties likely 'high' after earthquake strikes Haiti

The US Geological Survey is estimating high casualties in Haiti following a 7.2-magnitude earthquake Saturday morning.

The earthquake occurred about 12 kilometres northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and registered at 10 kilometres deep. The US Geological Survey said the disaster is likely widespread.

According to reporting by CNN, the death toll has reached over 300 people with more than 1.800 wounded.

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the same peninsula of Haiti, approximately 75 km east of Saturday's earthquake. The 2010 earthquake caused substantial damage in the city of Port-au-Prince and the surrounding regions, resulting in over 200,000 deaths.
