OPP investigate fatal boating incident near Rondeau Park

Provincial police in Chatham-Kent say one person is dead and another is missing after a boat capsized near Rondeau Park Friday morning.

At around 9:22 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Chatham-Kent Fire Department responded to a boating incident on Lake Erie about 100 yards out from the shoreline of Rondeau Provincial Park.

According to OPP, another boater saw the overturned boat and called police.

At 11 a.m., firefighters located an unresponsive person on the shore of Rondeau Park who was later determined to be deceased.

Through further investigation, police determined that a second person was on the boat when it flipped.

OPP along with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton, Canadian Coast Guard, OPP Aviation Services and officials with Rondeau Park remain in that area of Lake Erie Friday evening searching for the other person.

No other details about the deceased have been released at this time.

The West Region OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team and Forensic Identification Services also attended the scene for the investigation.

OPP will provide an update when new information is available.
