Seven new COVID-19 cases in London and Middlesex

A day after reporting no new cases of COVID-19, the Middlesex London Health Unit reported seven new cases on Wednesday.

And while seven new cases were added to the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic, the number of active cases dropped. When taking into account the number of resolved cases reported Wednesday, the number of active cases is now down to 58.

No deaths were reported Wednesday. The last COVID-19 deaths reported in London and Middlesex County were on Friday, when the health unit reported the deaths of a man in his 50s and a man in his 60s. The health unit says neither had received a dose of vaccine.

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has eight COVID-19 inpatients in its care. Of those, fewer than five are listed in intensive care. Currently, fewer than five hospital staff have tested positive for the virus. An outbreak remains at Victoria Hospital’s adult inpatient mental health unit, but no new cases have been associated with it.

The number of cases involving variants of concern identified in the area is up to 3,636. There have been 3,381 confirmed cases involving the B.1.1.7 (Alpha) variant that originated in the U.K., 129 cases of the Delta variant that was first found in India, 120 cases of the P.1 (Gamma) variant from Brazil, and two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta) variant from South Africa.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, there were nine new COVID-19 cases reported Wednesday. Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for the region, said that brings the local total number of cases to 3,972 with 3,850 resolved. The death toll was unchanged at 84. Currently, there are 38 active cases in the two counties.

Across Ontario, another 139 cases were reported Wednesday.

There are 112 people with COVID-19 being treated in Ontario hospitals, an increase of more than 40 from Tuesday's report.

To date, the province has administered 19,652,011 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
