CKHA says additional provincial cash will help clear surgical backlog

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is getting some extra provincial cash to improve access to hospital care in Chatham and Wallaceburg.

Local MPPs Rick Nicholls and Monte McNaughton said the additional $3.2 million in operating funds is an increase of 2.6 per cent from the funding received last year.

President and CEO of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Lori Marshall is thankful for the increased operational funding and said the money will come in handy.

“Chatham-Kent Health Alliance welcomes this latest funding announcement, providing for the sustainability of core services at the hospital’s Chatham and Wallaceburg sites," said Marshall. “I can say that with the new funding we are aiming to do an additional 20 per cent of elected surgeries compared with last year, which includes an additional 90 hip and knee cases in this coming year.”

“It is clear, now that we are on our way out of this pandemic, that local hospitals and staff have gone above and beyond to provide us with exceptional care to the in-need patients and families of Chatham—Kent,” said Nicholls, MPP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington. “Investments in our health care system today not only help the recovery process of COVID-19 but will also better prepare us for any future emergencies.”

Hospitals across Ontario are getting an extra $1.8 billion in 2021-22, including an increase of $778 million for services and to ensure that all publicly funded hospitals will receive a minimum of a one per cent increase.
