A State of Emergency has been declared in Wheatley after Hydrogen Sulfide was found at 15 Erie Street North on Monday.
According to Chatham-Kent Fire, crews responded to 15 Erie Street after the Hydrogen Sulfide detector activated just after 8 a.m. Monday.
As a result, Erie Street North between Talbot Street and Elm Street and Talbot Street East between Erie Street to Little Street has been closed off.
Municipality officials said there is no detection of gas at the location but there is a prominent gas odour outside of the building and its surrounding areas.
While officials try to determine the source of the gas, the municipality is taking steps to keep the community informed and provide aid for residents and businesses.
A total of 52 people in 23 homes and 13 businesses in those areas have been evacuated. Housing Officers from Community Human Services are working with displaced residents to provide emergency accommodation where needed.
"This is a very difficult time for the residents and business owners of Wheatley," said Acting Chief Administrative Officer Cathy Hoffman. "Our municipal team is here to support those affected and are working diligently to engage provincial officials to also take a leadership role."
Residents are asked to call the municipality at 3-1-1 to register for the subscription service or to have their questions directed to the appropriate officials.
