Man facing domestic offences

A Tilbury man will have to answer to a trio of charges after allegedly assaulting a woman and trying to steal her purse.

According to police, the man was previously released from custody in January 2021. One of the conditions of the release was that he was not to communicate with a specific Shrewsbury woman.

Around 9 p.m. Monday, police said the woman was walking on Lyon Street in Tilbury when the man approached her. He then allegedly assaulted her and stole her purse.

A citizen in the area was able to intervene and the man fled the scene.

Around 1 a.m. Tuesday, he was located by police and arrested.

The 42-year-old has been charged with assault, robbery and failing to comply with his release conditions. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Cyclist hit in Chatham 

A 60-year-old woman was able to walk away with only minor injuries after being struck while out for a bicycle ride in Chatham.

Police responded to a collision on Grand Avenue East near Victoria Avenue on Monday afternoon.

According to police, the cyclist was hit by a vehicle as she was travelling southbound. The vehicle was travelling northbound attempting to turn westbound.

The cyclist was treated at the scene by EMS for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car was not physically injured.

As a result, the driver, a 33-year-old Chatham woman, was charged with making an unsafe turn.

Break and enter at Chatham gas station

Police are investigating after some chocolate bars were stolen from a Chatham gas station.

Chatham-Kent police responded to an alarm at the UPI Gas Bar on Park Avenue East around 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Upon police arrival, officers observed that the front doors had been smashed.

Police reviewed the video surveillance and learned that a man allegedly forced his way into the business and stole a quantity of chocolate bars.

According to police, the suspect was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, ball cap and jeans.

Damage is estimated around $500.

Traffic stop leads to charges 

A 23-year-old man is facing a couple of charges after an early morning traffic stop in Chatham.

Around 2 a.m. Tuesday, a police officer on general patrol spotted a vehicle speeding on St. Clair Street.

According to police, the officer initiated a traffic stop and through investigation learned that the licence plates were not registered to the vehicle and the man was driving with no insurance.

The Chatham man was charged with failing to surrender an insurance card and using plates not authorized for the vehicle.

Additionally, the plates were seized from the vehicle and arrangements were made by the man to have the vehicle towed from the parking lot.

Police nab 'suspicious' person

A call about a suspicious person is to thank for an arrest in Chatham.

Just before 5 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to the report of a suspicious man in the area of Ursuline Avenue.

Police located the man through investigation learned that he was wanted for theft and fraud related offences. He was also bound by a daily curfew.

The 27-year-old Chatham man was arrested on the outstanding warrants and additionally charged with failing to comply with his release conditions. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Man charged with trespassing

Shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a break and enter on King Street East in Chatham.

Through investigation, officers located a former tenant in the apartment.

As a result, the 35-year-old Chatham man was issued a ticket for trespassing.
