The former Chatham jail is up for sale, again.
The building was sold to the Warrener family for about $1-million in 2018 and it is now listed for $2,147,000 three years later.
Carson Warrener said his family had plans for a residential project in the building but was set back by the pandemic.
"We wanted to put the building back out on the open market for somebody who is willing to take it to its next level and bring some type of development to fruition," said Warrener.
The jail and courthouse were built in 1849 and designed by Canadian architect William Thomas. The building located on Stanley Avenue includes a newer, four-storey tower, that is tenanted by Infrastructure Ontario.
"We want to ensure the building goes into the hands of someone who appreciates historic buildings," said Warrener. "It is a designated building, and old buildings take a different approach to their renovations to preserve its historical features."
Warrener said the market has increased since the building was sold, explaining the increase in value since 2018.
"The potential for someone to come in and do a very profitable and beneficial renovation is there," said Warrener. "We feel the price is right in line with that."
The Warreners are known for their restoration projects around Chatham-Kent, most notable being the Chatham Armouries.
Warrener said the family is focusing primarily on the armoury building and its event hosting.
