Drivers can expect to see some new bumps in the parking lot at a popular beachfront park in Mitchell's Bay in the near future.
To help reduce speeding at Dover Beach Park, Chatham-Kent council approved a motion to install speed humps in the parking lot, Monday night.
The motion was put forward by Councillor Jamie McGrail, who wants drivers to slow down when entering and exiting the parking lot that is located at the end of Main Street in Mitchell's Bay.
"The bike trail passes right in front of where you enter and exit the beach parking lot," said Coun. McGrail. "That's why I am asking for this because this is truly a hazard with that bike trail being right in front."
While McGrail's motion was up for discussion, Chatham-Kent's General Manager of Infrastructure and Engineering Thomas Kelly suggested that staff take time with the request, examine the problem, and apply it to more parking lots.
"The only awareness we have [of this issue] is through the deputation and Councillor McGrail," said Kelly. "This is where [municipal staff] have struggled with this request because it adds to our infrastructure and our lifecycle."
Councillor Joe Faas followed that up by entering motion to refer the matter back to staff for review and to include other options, but council decided to deal with the motion the same night.
"I think this is a simple request," said Councillor Michael Bondy. "A report back would offer different options on how to calm traffic, but I think we've got the option, it's speed bumps."
The cost of installing the speed humps would cost less than $2,500 and be funded through the Parking Lot Lifecycle Reserve.
