July rain washing over CK lately not unusual

Environment Canada is reporting that the Chatham-Kent area received about 30 millimeters of rain at its reporting stations over the last couple of days, but forecasters say that's not out of the ordinary.

Meteorologist Peter Kimbell said Ridgetown reported around 20 millimeters on Thursday and the Chatham Airport reported about 28 millimeters. Kimbell said Windsor received 12 millimeters and Harrow got eight over that same time period.

He said the air mass has been unstable lately producing thunderstorms, but added that's typical for southwestern Ontario in July, which is the thunderstorm capital of Canada.

"There been a bit of a trough of low pressure going through the last couple of days providing the trigger for convection. The air mass has been unstable to begin with with warmth at the surface and cool air aloft. It's provided the fuel for some thunderstorm activity," said Kimbell.

He said the weather instability doesn't have anything to do with the heat wave that blanketed the west coast last week. Kimbell noted that June was dry and it's good that we're getting some rain.

Environment Canada is forecasting a 60 per cent chance of rain on Sunday and Monday but mainly sunny skies for the rest of the work week.

The Weather Network is predicting a good chance of showers all of next week.
