Ontario's top doctor gives his final COVID-19 update

Ontario's COVID-19 numbers continue to trend in the right direction as Ontario's top doctor passes the torch to his successor, Dr. Kieran Moore.

The province reported 296 cases of COVID-19 and six additional deaths on Thursday. Outgoing Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Williams said a total of 847 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded since Monday, June 21.

"It's been a long time that we have had under 1000 cases in that time period and that tells you the impact that we're having with the vaccination program," said Williams.

More than 65 per cent of adults in Ontario have had one dose of a vaccine and over 29 per cent have had two doses.

Williams said the province has been meeting milestones and trends, setting two records in daily vaccinations with over 217,000 each day in each of the last two days.

Premier Doug Ford has decided to move Ontario into Step 2 of the government's reopening plan next Wednesday, two days ahead of schedule.

This means people can get haircuts, visit outdoor parks, and have up to five people in their household.

"These are great rewards for people in Ontario," said Williams. "We want to say thank you for what you have done."

Williams is set to retire on June 25 and Moore will step into the role on June 26.
