Two teens arrested after violent run-in with police
A 17-year-old youth is facing some serious charges after he allegedly assaulted an officer and reached for a second officer's gun.
Police said the youth became belligerent and lunged at an officer who was investigating a report of some youths throwing rocks at vehicles in downtown Chatham at around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.
Officers said the youth was one of four young people who were spotted near the Downtown Chatham Centre while police were following up on the call.
When the officer was arresting the youth, he allegedly assaulted the officer in an attempt to free himself and then tried to grab a second officer's firearm, which was still secured in its holster.
He also allegedly threatened to shoot the officers.
The youth was taken into custody and also allegedly lied to police about his identity.
Officers were able to identify him and charged him with assaulting police, disarming a police officer, uttering threats, and obstructing police. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
A second person was also charged in connection with the case -- an 18-year-old Chatham man who allegedly interfered with the youth's arrest.
Police said when they searched the man, they found a knife in his possession. He was charged with possession of a banned weapon and later released pending a future court date.
