Plane crash leaves Dutton man with 'life altering' injuries

A 67-year-old man was seriously hurt when his home-built, single engine plane crashed into an unfinished home in Dutton Thursday night.

Emergency crews were called to a new subdivision on Leitch Street after the plane went down around 6:15 p.m. It was determined the Rutan Long-EZ aircraft had missed a grass landing strip on private property and collided with the foundation of a new home.

The pilot and lone occupant, a 67-year-old Dutton man, had to be cut from the wreckage. He was airlifted to hospital with serious, life altering injuries, Elgin OPP said.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been contacted and will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash.
