Canadians anxious about border reopening (Poll)

While municipal officials in border cities in Ontario prepare for the possible reopening of land crossings later this month, a new poll suggests Canadians are experiencing some anxiety.

Leger conducted a survey last weekend and found over eight out of ten Canadian respondents said they wouldn't travel to the U.S.

Only 17 per cent said they would travel to the U.S. despite having to quarantine when they returned.

Should the border reopen when the current agreement between the two countries expires on June 21, American visitors might find their Canadian hosts to be a little less than welcoming. Only 36 per cent of total respondents in Canada said the border should reopen to Americans this summer. Around 64 per cent said no.

Asked if it should reopen specifically to American tourists, just three per cent of Canadians agreed.

Meanwhile, Americans seem much more eager to cross. About 78 per cent of U.S. respondents said the border should reopen to Americans, and 14 per cent said for tourism.

Now that restrictions are starting to lift in Ontario and other parts of the country following the third wave of the pandemic, more people feel good about the year ahead. Sixty-two per cent of total Canadian participants and 58 per cent of those living in Ontario feel optimistic, while only half of Americans do.

And, asked whether they believe the worst of the pandemic is behind us, 59 per cent of Ontario residents agreed, 61 per cent of all Canadians, and 62 per cent of Americans.

Leger surveyed 1,539 Canadians and 1,004 Americans between June 4 and 6. The poll is considered accurate +/- 2.5 per cent of the time 19 times out of 20 for Canadians, and +/- 3.09 per cent of the time 19 times out of 20 for U.S. participants.
