Fewer active COVID-19 cases reported in Windsor-Essex

Twenty-eight new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Windsor-Essex.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit said of the new cases reported Saturday, 11 are close contacts, 10 are community-acquired, and seven are under investigation.

There are currently 231 active cases in the region, which is a slight drop from the 250 active infections reported on Friday. Of the active cases, 120 cases are variants of concern.

The public health unit reported 15 hospitalizations.

The province reported 1,057 new COVID-19 infections and 15 deaths related to the virus Saturday morning. Hospitalizations in Ontario are down with 934 COVID-19 patients admitted. Of those hospitalized, 627 are in intensive care due to COVID-related illness and 438 are on ventilators.

So far, 241,676 Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The health unit reported that 24,876 residents are fully vaccinated.

Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliot said as of 8 p.m. Friday, 8,839,445 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.
