Man arrested twice in 24 hours

A 22-year-old Chatham man is facing several charges after an alleged crime spree where he was arrested, released, and then arrested again -- all within less than a day.

Chatham-Kent police said the man got their attention the first time when officers were investigating a report of damage to a scissor lift at Vertec Contractors on National Road in Chatham.

Police were called to the business at around 9 a.m. Thursday morning and learned that someone had removed copper from the scissor lift, causing about $5,000 in damage.

Officers were able to identify a suspect after reviewing some surveillance footage and arrested him shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday. He was later released with several conditions and a future court date.

Police said they arrested the same man early Friday morning when they were investigating a report of a break-in at Maple City Mini Storage on Queens Line.

Officers said they received that call at around 3:30 a.m. Friday, adding that while they were investigating, an alarm went off at the Esso Gas Station on Bloomfield Road -- a short distance away.

Police were able to confirm that a break-in had just taken place there and they also received information that a suspicious person was seen in the area of a hotel on Bloomfield Road.

Officers called in the K9 unit to help out with the investigation and K9 Helix was able to find a suspect hiding in a nearby dumpster.

The accused was arrested and charged with two counts of break and enter, possession of property obtained by crime, and breaching his curfew. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
