Wanted man allegedly driving while impaired by drug

A 27-year-old Blenheim man has been charged with impaired driving after a close call on Queens Line early Thursday morning.

Chatham-Kent police said an off-duty officer observed a possible impaired driver on that road just before 6 a.m. Thursday and stopped to check on the well-being of the driver after the vehicle almost rolled into the ditch.

Police believed that the man had been driving while impaired, so he was arrested and taken back to police headquarters for an evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

The DRE officer also believed the man was impaired by a drug, so he was charged with impaired driving in addition to driving while under suspension.

Police said the accused was also wanted on two outstanding warrants.

He was set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.
