London-area logs another 63 COVID-19 cases, zero new deaths

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 63 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday in the region.

The total number of cases in the London area is now at 11,949 overall with 11,135 resolved cases

There were 82 more recoveries reported over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of active cases down to 597.

For the first time since Monday, no new deaths were reported in the region on Saturday with the local death toll remaining at 217.

Another 50 variant infections were identified on Saturday for a total of 2,784. Of those, 2,701 are the B.1.1.7 strain that originated in the U.K., 32 are the P.1 variant from Brazil and one is the B.1.617 variant, originally found in India. Meanwhile, there are 376 cases confirmed with a mutation-positive sample.

There remain four outbreaks at local seniors’ facilities - Dearness Home, Kensington Village, Kensington Village Retirement and McGarrell Place.

Meanwhile, an outbreak was declared on Friday at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School. It is the only school in the area with a COVID-19 outbreak. There is also an ongoing outbreak at Simply Kids daycare in London.

Londoners aged 12 and up can book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment as of Sunday at 8 a.m.

In order to be eligible, individuals must be 12 years of age or older on the day of their vaccination.

Furthermore, all youth aged 12 to 17 will receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, as it is the only vaccine authorized for this age group in Canada, and will be directed to book their appointment at either the North London Optimist Community Centre or the soon-to-be-opened Earl Nichols Arena clinic," the health unit said through a media release.

Across Ontario, provincial health officials reported 1,794 new cases on Saturday, 20 more deaths and 2,520 additional recoveries. Currently, there are 1,207 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province. As of Friday night, the province had administered over 7.9 million doses of the vaccine.
