14th COVID-19 death reported in Chatham-Kent

A man in his 60s is the latest death linked to COVID-19 in Chatham-Kent.

Jeff Moco of Chatham-Kent Public Health said the man passed away on Tuesday at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA). His death marks the 14th coronavirus-related death in Chatham-Kent since the pandemic began.

The last time a COVID-19 death was reported in Chatham-Kent was on April 12 when a woman in her 80s passed away.

There is an ongoing outbreak within the Medicine Unit at the Chatham hospital, which was declared on May 11.

As of Wednesday morning, there is a total of six active cases associated with the hospital outbreak.

Moco confirmed that the latest COVID-19 death was not related to the outbreak.

On Wednesday, CKHA also reported there are currently nine COVID-19 patients at the hospital. Eight are local residents and one is not. Two COVID-10 patients are in the ICU, however, neither of them is on a ventilator. The local ICU occupancy is currently at 60 per cent.

The number of active cases in Chatham-Kent grew by two on Wednesday and is now at 37. Public Health reported four new cases and one new recovery. Chatham-Kent has seen a total of 1,845 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Additionally, there is an ongoing outbreak at an unnamed workplace in the municipality.

As of Wednesday morning, Chatham-Kent Public Health is reporting that just over 42,950 doses of the vaccine have been administered across Chatham-Kent with 41,153 people having had at least one dose.
