Man accused of locking himself inside vehicle following police chase

A 52-year-old Chatham man is facing several charges after a high speed chase that ended with a flat tire and an impaired driving charge.

Police said their investigation started when officers were called to a report of a suspicious man in the area of Churchill Park Road in Chatham at around 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Officers said they learned that the man had allegedly threatened two strangers, but when they searched the area, they couldn't find the man or his vehicle.

Police said they did eventually track the man's vehicle down in the downtown Chatham area just before 9 p.m. Monday and tried to pull it over, but the driver allegedly took off at a high rate of speed instead of stopping.

Officers found the vehicle again on King Street West a short time later with a flat tire. At that time, the man allegedly continued driving in a "dangerous manner" before stopping on Inshes Avenue.

Police said the man then locked himself in the vehicle and refused to get out, so officers forced their way in.

The man then allegedly resisted arrest and kicked an officer several times.

He was taken back to police headquarters for breath tests because investigators believed he had been driving under the influence of alcohol and the tests that came back showed that he registered more than two times the legal limit.

The accused was arrested and charged with three counts of uttering threats along with one count each of dangerous driving, resisting arrest, assaulting police, and having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.

He was taken into custody and set to be held there pending a bail hearing.
