Walpole Island reports second COVID-19 related death

Walpole Island First Nation is reporting its second COVID-19 related death.

Lambton Public Health confirmed on Tuesday that the person who died was a man in his 70s*. Walpole Island council also reported the death in its daily Bkejwanong COVID-19 numbers on Facebook.

The latest death marks the First Nation's second virus-related death since May of 2020. Lambton County last reported a death just shy of one month ago, the region has reported a total of 47 COVID-19 related deaths since the pandemic started.

As of Tuesday, Walpole Island is reporting seven active cases, for a total of 72 infections, 63 of which have been resolved. The community currently falls under the red-control level of the COVID-19 response framework.

*A previous version of this story reported the death as a woman in her 70s, but Lambton Public Health has since issued a correction confirming that it was a man in his 70s
