An additional COVID-19 related death is being reported in the Windsor-Essex region.
The death, along with 42 new cases of the virus, was reported on Saturday morning by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
The latest person to pass away was a man in his 70s from the general community. The total number of people who have died due to the virus in the region now sits at 397.
According to the health unit, 12 of the latest cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, five are community-acquired, three are outbreak-related and 22 cases are still under investigation.
The total number of cases is now at 13,380. Of those cases, 310 are listed as being active and 31 are hospitalized. Over the past 24 hours, 27 people have recovered from the virus. There have been 12,673 resolved cases since the start of the pandemic.
As of Saturday, 33 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified.
There remains four long-term care or retirement home outbreaks in the region. The latest outbreak was declared on Friday at Riverside Place. There are also four workplace outbreaks, two community outbreaks, one hospital outbreak and three school outbreaks.
According to the health unit, a total of 40,276 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been given to Windsor-Essex residents to date.
Elsewhere, provincial health officials recorded a total of 1,468 new cases of the virus on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in Ontario to 316,359. There were also 1,151 recoveries and 11 new deaths in the province.
