Chatham man promises to keep nose clean, has charges withdrawn

A Chatham man charged with child luring has had his charges withdrawn after he promised to keep the peace and behave himself.

Jeremy Gibson, 42, of Chatham was in court Monday morning to get his trial started but promised to apply for a peace bond instead. He must comply with certain conditions ordered by the court such as not contacting the person in question and maintaining good behaviour in order to fulfill the promise. The peace bond means Gibson avoids a criminal record.

Gibson was charged with luring a child under the age of 16 in November of 2019 after Chatham-Kent police became aware of a video that was circulating on social media and began investigating its contents, which included conversations through Instagram. Police also charged him with making sexually explicit material available to a person under the age of 16.

If Gibson breaks the peace bond by breaking the law, he can be charged with disobeying court orders and that comes with a jail term upon conviction.

Gibson had a trial scheduled for Monday and Friday.

A publication ban prevents further information from being made public to protect the identity of the victim.
