Woman accused of hiding cosmetics in empty baby car seat

A 41-year-old Walpole Island woman is facing charges in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident at the Shoppers Drug Mart on Queen Street in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent police said they were called to the store Monday morning, adding that through their investigation they learned that the woman was accused of concealing cosmetics in an empty baby car seat and on her person before walking out of the store without making any attempt to pay for the items.

Officers said the stolen items -- worth about $100 total -- were recovered when the woman was confronted by staff, but she took off as police were called in.

Police were able to find the woman a short distance from the store and arrested her. She was also arrested in connection with a shoplifting incident at the Real Canadian Superstore earlier this month.

The accused was charged with two counts of theft and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime and then released pending a future court date.

Shrewsbury man arrested after truck gets stuck in snowy field

A 24-year-old Shrewsbury man who wasn't supposed to be driving at all is in more trouble with the law after he allegedly got a truck stuck in a field while he was trying to evade police.

Police said on officer on general patrol spotted the man driving westbound on Selton Line Monday afternoon, adding that the man accelerated onto Orford Road in an attempt to get away.

Investigators said when the officer turned around to investigate, he found the truck stuck in a snow covered field on Goodbrand Line.

Police said as the officer approached the vehicle, the man was still trying to get the truck out of the snow.

The man was arrested at the scene and while he was being searched, police said they found some suspected fentanyl, crystal methamphetamine, heroin, and packaging materials on him. Officers said the illegal drugs had a combined street value of approximately $10,940.

As a result of the investigation, the man was charged with failing to comply with his release conditions and three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Suspicious vehicle complaint leads to drugs, stolen vehicle

A tip about a suspicious truck on Old Glass Road in Wallaceburg led police to a stolen vehicle and some drugs Monday afternoon.

Police said they were able to locate the truck, which was pulling a car dolly with a silver Dodge Caliber on it, and pulled it over.

The officer who stopped the vehicle allegedly saw a clear plastic baggie with some suspected crack cocaine in it and later learned that the Dodge Caliber the truck was towing was reported stolen from Petrolia last week.

A 35-year-old Wallaceburg man was arrested and charged with drug possession and possession of property obtained by crime. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Police track down woman who sped away from traffic stop

A 33-year-old Chatham woman with a history of driving while under suspension has been arrested again.

Police said the woman was arrested on January 23, 2021 and charged with driving while under suspension because her license was suspended for unpaid fines. She was then released with a future court date.

Police went looking for the woman again on January 26, 2021 after they got a tip that she was driving again.

Officers said they found her driving in Chatham and tried to pull her over, but she allegedly took off at a high rate of speed, prompting police to call off their pursuit for safety reasons.

Police said they were able to track the woman down Monday night and arrested her.

She was arrested, charged with driving under suspension, flight from police, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and then released from custody pending a future court date.

Another suspended driver arrested

A 39-year-old Wallaceburg man who was suspended from driving for unpaid fines is facing charges after police allegedly caught him driving on McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg.

Police said they stopped the vehicle Monday morning and charged him with driving while under suspension and failing to surrender his ownership and insurance for the vehicle.

Vehicle reported stolen in Dresden

Chatham-Kent police are working to track down a 2017 black Ford Freestyle that was reported stolen from a residence on Centre Street in Dresden.

Police said the vehicle was taken sometime over the weekend and was last seen with Ontario license plates CACX 911.

Police find stolen truck, flatbed trailer, still looking for info

Chatham-Kent police are appealing to the public for information as they try to solve a case involving a stolen pickup truck.

Police said they found the pickup truck and a 20' long homemade flatbed trailer attached to it on a property on Queens Line on January 28, 2021.

Officers believe the trailer may have been stolen and they are asking anyone with tips to come forward. You can find a picture of the trailer below.
