Local MPP announces lower hydro rates for pandemic will continue

Lower hydro rates during the COVID-19 pandemic will be continuing until February 9th.

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker says in a release from January 28th that the off-peak rate pricing will stay in effect to help with costs for everyone during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The province is extending electricity rate relief for families, small businesses and farms to support those spending more time at home in response to the provincial Stay-at-Home Order. The rate will stay at 8.5 cents per kilowatt-hour until at least February 9th for all time of use and tiered customers 24/7 during the extension.

The off-peak rate was first introduced by the provincial government on January 1st for an initial 28 day period before now being extended an additional 12 days for a total of 40 days of the off-peak rate being available 24/7.

"We know staying at home means using more electricity during the day when electricity prices are higher, that's why we are extending the off-peak electricity rate to provide households, small businesses and farms with stable and predictable electricity bills when they need it most," says Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, Minister of Indigenous Affairs. "We thank Ontarians for following the provincial Stay-at-Home Order to help stop the spread of COVID-19."

"We thank the Ontario Energy Board and local distribution companies across the province for implementing this extended emergency rate relief and supporting Ontarians as they work and learn from home," adds Walker, in his role as MPP and Associate Minister of Energy.
