COVID-19 blamed for fatality at Exeter Villa

An additional resident of the Exeter Villa has passed away due to COVID-19. There have now been 23 deaths related to the virus reported by Huron Perth Public Health.

“This resident was a beloved, long-standing soul who lived in the Retirement Living side, then the Long-Term Care side of Exeter Villa. Staff are deeply saddened by this loss as we extend our sympathy to loved ones,” says Erika King, Exeter Villa Administrator.

31 residents and eight staff at Exeter Villa long term care were infected as an outbreak continues. A total of 12 resident cases have been resolved. Currently there is only one staff case active. Public Health reports that most residents are experiencing mild symptoms, if any at this time, and all affected individuals continue to be cared for at Exeter Villa. No residents have been admitted to hospital, and all residents in both LTC and Retirement areas remain isolated in their rooms to prevent further spread of undetected cases.

King says that Exeter Villa continues to be in daily contact with Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) to support case and contact management and infection control.  Full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is being used by staff in all interactions with residents and all outbreak measures remain in place at Exeter Villa to protect both staff and residents. Exeter Villa is also working closely with many community partners who have provided support and assistance during this time, including the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance, the South West Local Health Integration Network, Huron County Paramedic Services, the municipality of South Huron, and Ontario Health.

“We know how serious this virus can be for our vulnerable populations, especially our residents in long-term care and retirement living and more so with those who have underlying health conditions,” says King. “It has been heartwarming to see the responsive support shown by the community and our families and we want to express our gratitude for the positive action and outreach shown to us during this challenging time.”

Braemar Nursing home in Morris Turnberry and Knollcrest Lodge in Perth East are also experiencing outbreaks after two staff members tested positive at each site. One staff member tested positive at Seaforth Manor Long Term Care.  Livingstone Manor retirement Home in North Perth recorded four cases of COVID-19.
