It is a grim milestone for Middlesex-London as the region's daily COVID-19 case count hit triple digits for the first time ever.
The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 100 new infections and one additional death on Tuesday. The triple digit surge of new cases breaks the previous single-day case record of 87, which was set on December 18 and matched on December 22.
The region's total case count since the start of the pandemic stands at 3,106.
The new death was a man in his 80s who lived in a local long-term care home. His death brings the region's death toll to 100. Nearly half of the total deaths have occurred since mid-October.
The number of resolved cases in the area has risen to 2,414, leaving 592 cases active.
A two-building apartment complex in the city is the latest to declare an outbreak. Public health officials confirmed 46 people, including three staff members, have contracted the virus at Maple Ridge on the Parc at 112 and 114 Arbor Glen Crescent. Nearly 20 of the cases at the buildings were identified within the last week.
Twelve local long-term care and retirement homes have active outbreaks. Facilities dealing with outbreaks are Country Terrace, Dearness Home, Earls Court Village, Extendicare, Glendale Crossing, McGarrell Place, Middlesex Terrace, Mount Hope Centre for Long-Term Care, Oakcrossing Retirement Living, People Care Oak Crossing, Sisters of St. Joseph, and Westmount Gardens.
An outbreak remains on a single unit at Victoria Hospital, while all outbreaks at University Hospital have now been resolved. It is the first time since early November the north London hospital has been outbreak free. In all, the 11-unit outbreak at University Hospital saw 92 staff and 82 patients infected. Twenty-three deaths were also associated with the hospital outbreak.
Two more outbreaks were declared this week at area schools for a total of four. Schools dealing with outbreaks are Covenant Christian school, École secondaire catholique Monseigneur-Bruyère, A.B. Lucas secondary, and John Paul II Catholic secondary.
The outbreak at Western University's Saugeen-Maitland Hall residence, which had been ongoing since November 19 has finally been declared over. That leaves just one outbreak at the university at the Perth Hall residence.
Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported 27 new COVID-19 cases for a second day in a row. The total case count for that region now stands at 1,186. Resolved cases have risen to 900 with 17 more recoveries reported since Monday. The death toll is unchanged at 12. Currently, there are 264 active cases in the two counties.
Ontario also logged a new single-day record high number of new COVID-19 cases.
Public health officials said there were 2,553 new infections in the province Tuesday and 1,939 the previous day.
COVID-19 figures were not released on Monday as it was a statutory holiday.
Toronto led the way for the most new cases over the last 24 hours with 895. Peel followed with 496, Windsor-Essex had 147, Hamilton had 144 and York Region recorded 142.
Ontario’s total number of cases now stands at 175,908.
In the last 48 hours, 78 more people died from the virus across the province, increasing the death toll to 4,455.
Recoveries are up to 151,562.
Currently, there are 864 infected Ontarians in hospital. Of those, 304 are in the intensive care unit and 207 are on ventilators.
Testing has dropped over the holidays, with only 34,112 tests processed over the past 24 hours.
Ontario’s positivity rate stands at 9.7 per cent, the highest it has ever been.
