The Ford Motor Company has called back thousands of its new E-Series vehicles due to an issue with insulation.
The automaker has issued a recall for over 31,000 of its 2021 E-Series vans because insulation on the underside of the engine cover does not extend properly. As a result, engine cover surface temperatures can rise in vans equipped with stationary elevated idle control or Battery Charge Protect.
"Direct and continuous contact with certain areas of the surface of the engine cover in the passenger compartment may cause burns to the skin of the driver or front passenger," read the recall notice.
The recall covers a total of 29,344 vans sold in the United States and 2,412 sold in Canada. The vehicles were built at Ford's Ohio Assembly Plant between May 11, 2019 and November 13, 2020.
Affected owners will get a recall notice in the mail and are asked to bring their E-Series vans in for service. The dealer will check the engine cover for gaps between the rubber seal and the insulation. If gaps are found, the dealer will install engine cover insulation patches.
"The dealer will also update the powertrain calibration for heat management under certain elevated idle conditions," said the recall notice.
No collisions or injuries have been reported due to this issue.
The Ford reference number for this recall is 20-S-73.
