Midwestern Ontario registers new COVID-19 cases

The Grey Bruce Health Unit added seven new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, for a total of 26 active cases, who had 201 high risk contacts. Three people are in hospital. There are four new cases in Southgate, and one each in Blue Mountains, Grey Highlands and Brockton.

Huron Perth Public Health added one new case of COVID-19 to the list of active patients Wednesday, located in North Perth. There are 49 active cases and three people are in hospital.

In Wellington County, public health officials confirmed 3 new cases for a total of 24 active cases. Two people are in hospital.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is recommending the region move into the red "control" level as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise.

In a release, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Nicola Mercer says COVID-19 is spreading very quickly, and the rate at which cases continue to grow requires immediate action.

Moving to the red zone means limitations to gathering sizes and new restrictions to businesses.

If the Ontario government follows the recommendation to move the area into red, it would be announced on Friday and come into effect on Monday, December 14.

The earliest possible move back to orange would be 28 days later.

The status of outbreaks across midwestern Ontario hasn't changed in the past few days.
