BREAKING: First COVID-19 school outbreak declared in CK

Chatham-Kent's Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Colby has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Winston Churchill Public School in Chatham.

Although cases have been confirmed at schools before, this is the first school outbreak to be declared in Chatham-Kent.

Health officials said on Saturday, an outbreak at a school is declared when there are two or more positive cases and when transmission within the school community has been confirmed.

The health unit said parents and guardians, as well as students and staff at Winston Churchill Public School, have been notified.

Anyone who had direct contact with a positive case has been told to isolated and get tested. Those who have not been contacted by public health officials are not required to be tested.

Winston Churchill Public School will remain open.

As of Friday, the health unit reported 32 active COVID-19 cases in Chatham-Kent with one resident in the hospital. The Lambton-Kent Public School Board reported two confirmed cases at Winston Churchill Public School, as of Friday morning.
