Officers showed up at the residence on Ursuline Avenue and arrested a suspect in connection with the case. Police said they also found some suspected crystal methamphetamine on the man they arrested.

Crime Stoppers looking for tips after smoke barn break-ins

Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers is putting out a call for tips in connection with several break and enters at local smoke barns that are curing tobacco.

Officials said the break-ins took place in the area of Fargo Road, Erieau Road, and Talbot Trail.

They said the theft of several thousand stalks of tobacco is a major concern for the farmers, but they are also worried about the risk of a fire breaking out at the barns, which could cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It's believed the suspect responsible for the thefts has knowledge of the tobacco industry because the tobacco that is curing has little value to anyone until it receives further specialized treatment to make it a marketable product.

If you know something that could help police track down the person responsible -- or if you know where the tobacco has been taken, you are asked to call 1800-222-8477 and could earn a cash reward.
