Woman accused of stealing neighbour's cat

A 51-year-old Chatham woman is facing charges after she allegedly stole her neighbour's cat and then claimed it was hers.

Police said they were called to a residence in Chatham last week Friday after a woman reported that her cat had been stolen by her neighbour.

Officers said they spoke with the neighbour multiple times in an effort to resolve the situation, but the neighbour claimed the cat was hers and refused to cooperate with police.

Investigators said they were able to determine the rightful owner of the cat with the assistance of photographs and OSPCA documents, adding that the cat was also micro-chipped.

As a result, officers executed a warrant at the neighbour's home on Tuesday and retrieved the cat for its rightful owner.

The neighbour accused of stealing it was arrested and charged with theft and possession of stolen property. She was later released with a future court date.
