Traffic stop leads to drug bust

A traffic stop in Chatham turned up drugs such as suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine.

Police said officers stopped a silver Chevrolet Sedan on Thursday morning because the licence plates were registered for a grey Dodge and it had an expired validation.

The vehicle was stopped on Richmond Street and the driver was arrested. During a search, officers seized $6,700 worth of drugs, an unspecified amount of cash, a cell phone, and a scale.

A 39-year-old Chatham man was charged with three counts of possession for the purposes of trafficking and using plates not authorized for the vehicle.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

----------- Impaired driving charge laid

A two-vehicle crash in Chatham that caused $35,000 worth of damages has also resulted in charges against both drivers.

The collision happened on Richmond Street near Jeffery Street around 1 a.m. on Friday.

One of the drivers, a 26-year-old Chatham woman, was taken to OPP headquarters after she failed a roadside breath test. She was later charged with having a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit. She has a future court date scheduled for November 6.

The other driver involved, a 38-year-old Chatham man, was charged with making an unsafe lane change.

No injuries were reported.

Racial slurs and threats uttered in Wallaceburg

A 42-year-old man who allegedly threatened his neighbour and yelled racial slurs is now facing charges.

Officers were called to an apartment building in Wallaceburg on Thursday night.

Police said the 42-year-old threatened to assault his neighbour and damage his vehicle. He was arrested and charged on Friday morning with public incitement of hatred and two counts of uttering threats.

Chatham collisions reported

Officers kept busy on Thursday with a couple of collisions in Chatham.

A two-vehicle crash was reported on Wellington Street near Centre Street around noon on Thursday. No injuries were reported but damage was estimated at $20,000. A 70-year-old Chatham man was charged with failing to yield the right of way.

In a separate case, minor injuries were reported in a two-vehicle crash on Queens Line. Damage was estimated at $20,000. A 30-year-old Chatham man was charged with careless driving.

Man allegedly intoxicated in public

A 62-year-old Tilbury man has been charged with being intoxicated in public.

Police said he was unable to care for himself when he was found near the bus depot on Centre Street in Chatham on Thursday night.

He was taken into police custody and released once sober. ------------- Warrants executed

Chatham-Kent police have arrested a 29-year-old Wallaceburg man in connection with a domestic disturbance reported earlier this month. He was charged with two counts of assault and released with a future court date scheduled for November 20.

A 33-year-old Orford Township man wanted for failing to attend court last week has turned himself in. He was arrested at police headquarters on Thursday afternoon.
