The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit said the risk of transmitting COVID-19 to others at St. Clair College in Windsor is low, but it has confirmed a second student has tested positive for the virus.
The student's classmates have been told to self-monitor for symptoms for the next two weeks. The health unit does not think it is necessary for them to self-isolate, and labs will continue as scheduled at the college.
The college has an extensive plan to prevent the transmission of COVID-19, including enhanced cleaning protocols, enforced physical distancing, mandatory face masks, and restrictions on gatherings.
"The health and safety of our students and staff remain the paramount concern of the college's administration," said President, Patti France. "It can only be assured by the conscientious observance of the implemented safeguards by all of us. Doing so will continue to allow us to operate until the pandemic is alleviated."
Students and staff are also required to fill out an online questionnaire daily before coming to the campus.
The college continues to consult with the health unit on best practices, and the student is being monitored by public health officials.
The first student to contract COVID-19 at St. Clair College was diagnosed in August.
