Secondary schools with the Avon Maitland District School Board have created new ways to celebrate secondary students graduating in 2020.
The COVID-19 pandemic meant students were not able to participate in traditional June events like commencement, or prom.
Schools were hoping to be able to celebrate this fall instead, but restrictions on gathering sizes have forced schools to come up with new ways to honour graduates.
All schools are celebrating, some virtually, some with small groups (with sanitization in between), and one using a drive-in movie theatre.
The AMDSB Board of Trustees, along with members of the board’s senior leadership team, extend their warm congratulations to all of the 2020 graduates.
Director of Education Lisa Walsh says: “I am proud of the creative solutions that our schools have developed in order to celebrate this achievement for our 2020 graduating students. Finishing your last year of highschool in quarantine was not ideal, but I know our students are prepared for their next step. We wish them all the best and congratulations.”
