Master plan looks to address Ridgetown flooding, infrastructure

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is looking for public input as work on a Ridgetown Stormwater Master Plan gets underway.

The municipality is working on the master plan, with assistance from Ecosystem Recovery Inc. and RC Spencer Associates Inc.

The master plan is meant to offer options to address flooding concerns and ageing stormwater infrastructure.

A study conducted in 2014 found that the stormwater pipes in Ridgetown no longer meet current standards. As stated in an online municipal video, the cost of replacing or improving the stormwater system may cost upwards of $50 million.

"The Master Plan will evaluate a set of alternatives that may include storm sewer upsizing, improvements to overland flow conveyance, pump stations, and stormwater management facilities," read a release from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. "The study will produce a preferred alternative and develop a prioritization of storm sewer replacement and upgrades based on condition and capacity concerns."

However, an important element of the master plan is stakeholder consultation, which includes feedback from agencies, landowners, and the public.

Public consultations will be held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. Online content will include videos, questionnaires, and virtual meetings.

An online survey is also available and will remain open for public input until October 1.

The master plan report is expected to go out for public review in July 2021.
