UPDATE: Windy weather prompts flood watch

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority is advising residents of possible flooding along the Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair shorelines as a strong wind warning is in effect.

Conservation officials said winds from the south or southwest are expected to gust up to 50 kilometres per hour, starting Thursday afternoon. The wind direction is then expected to change to the northwest by early Friday morning.

Strong winds on Thursday may cause a backwater effect in the Wallaceburg area and increased wave action along the Lake St. Clair shoreline. Minor flooding is also possible for areas along the Lake Huron shoreline, specifically the Old Lakeshore Road area of Brights Grove.

The conservation authority is reminding residents to be careful near river banks and shorelines as they may be slippery.

The flood watch will remain in effect until Saturday.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority also issued another flood watch for areas along the Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair shorelines on Thursday.

According to conservation officials, the strong winds could cause flooding in Lake Erie communities such as Erie Shore Drive.

Due to high lake levels, there is also a risk that wave action could damage shoreline protection works and cause erosion all along the Lake Erie shoreline in Chatham-Kent and Elgin County, including along the high bluff areas.

In addition, there is a risk for flooding in the community of Lighthouse Cove, either from wave action in shoreline areas or from the canals due to lake setup effects.

The flood watch from the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority is in effect until Saturday.
