The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) has issued a flood watch.
The LTVCA said a combination of strong wind, high waves, and a risk of thunderstorms could cause shoreline damage, erosion and/or flooding along the Lake Erie shoreline, including the high bluffs. Flooding is possible along Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent and other south-facing shoreline communities along Lake Erie are also at some risk.
The conservation authority said heavy rains associated with thunderstorm activity could also cause flooding in low lying shoreline areas on either Lake St. Clair or Lake Erie.
"Due to the high lake levels, the groundwater table is high and stormwater sewer systems and local watercourses are full with lake water," said Jason Wintermute with the LTVCA. "As a result, rainwater is not draining properly from these areas. This also makes these areas more vulnerable to flooding from nearby watercourses."
Wintermute added people should take extra caution and avoid the shoreline should conditions become rough because the waves can be strong and the shoreline can become slippery. He said there could also be hazardous debris within the waves and water that could be thrown onto the shore.
The flood watch will be in effect until Friday.
