Government spending, corruption focus of Sarnia 'Freedom Rally'

Sarnia-Lambton residents concerned about government spending and corruption are invited to protest with Canadians from coast-to-coast Saturday.

The "Freedom Rally", from noon until 3 p.m. in Sarnia's Centennial Park, will mirror a larger rally planned in Ottawa at the same time.

Local organizer Joyce Ireland said all are welcome to attend the social-distanced event.

Ireland said she has a number of concerns about what's happening right now across the country.

"Mainly what's happening with the federal government and our money, the dictatorship, having our parliament shut down, our money just disappearing by hundreds of millions, while parliament's shut down, is extremely upsetting. I have children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren that I'm concerned about their future, I'm concerned about Canada."

Ireland said Saturday's event will feature a number of speakers and is intended to give everyone a voice.

"People that feel 'oh they don't like what's happening but what can they do about it,'" she said. "On the corruption, the tyranny, the whatever anyone feels they have to deal with."

Bob Bryenton is helping Ireland get the word out about the event.

He said people are unhappy with what's going on in Canada, this event will allow you to stand up.

"Well I'm unhappy with the government, all governments in Canada basically, because I'm afraid that we're going to run out of money," he said. "The biggest rally is happening in Ottawa, and they hope to have, they're saying, up to 200,000 people, and we can't get down to Ottawa, so we're just trying to mirror the rally down there and get a little bit of attention, see if we can make something happen."
