Careless smoking gets the blame for Chatham blaze

No injuries are being reported, but the damages are estimated at $50,000 after a house fire on Ingram Street in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent fire crews from Stations #1 and #2 were called to the scene just after 5 p.m. Sunday.

By the time crews arrived, smoke was already coming from the door frame and the front window of one of the apartment units at the building.

Investigators determined that a cigarette that was not properly extinguished sparked the blaze.

As an additional safety message, Fire officials are reminding residents that they can get a free CHiRP Home Safety Check by calling 519-360-1998 or emailing ckfire@chatham-kent.ca.

During the check, firefighters will come to your home to check your alarms and speak with you and your family about fire safety.
