United Way distributes final grants under federal emergency fund

The Emergency Compassion Support Fund (ECSF) in Sarnia-Lambton has come to a close with the United Way after distributing over $300,000 on behalf of the federal government.

A total of 13 organizations received 18 grants

Most recently, River City Vineyard was awarded $92,000 to complete renovations to on-site washrooms and to build 10 women's pods around individual shelter beds.

The YMCA Learning and Career Centre in Sarnia received $37,000 to help new adult permanent residents learn English.

The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario had previously been given over $46,000 to build and distribute activity kits for low-income children and youth and for families of children with autism. The Y Austim Summer Camp was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Three grants totalling over $17,000 go to Lambton Elderly Outreach including $12,000 to install plexiglass barriers, construction of a wall and a secure door in the reception area.

The Rapids Family Health Team receives $3,000 for plexiglass screens in counselling areas.

Youth volunteers practice coastal conservation

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
