After crowding, Essex Council shuts down Colchester Beach

Following an emergency meeting Monday night, Essex Town Council has voted to close Colchester Beach until further notice.

Over the weekend, photos circulated on social media of large crowds on the beach. In the images, many of the visitors appeared not wearing masks, and not social distancing.

"We recognize that many of our residents and their families love to visit Colchester Beach, but, unfortunately, the large volume of people created significant concerns for Colchester residents and town staff," said Mayor Larry Snively. "Council felt that this is a necessary step to ensure the safety of everybody so our region can move to stage two as soon as possible."

Before the beach reopens, councillors will look at enhancing procedures to ensure social distancings and safety during the pandemic.

Councillor Sherry Bondy said in a Facebook post the measures could include more staff on the beach, along with "better signage [and] bathrooms."

She said, "this was not a decision Essex council made lightly. Both sides are defensible. The concern for our local residents is of the utmost importance."
