COVID-19 has reportedly hit home for the Toronto Blue Jays.
According to a report from ESPN's Jeff Passan, and relayed by CBS Sports, the Jays have shut down their spring-training home in Dunedin, Florida after a pitcher, who is on Toronto's 40-man roster, began experiencing symptoms of novel coronavirus.
Passan cited multiple sources in his report, though there has been no confirmation from the Blue Jays. However, Jays General Manager Ross Atkins told ESPN that the team is treading carefully and moving forward with rigorous testing.
The player experiencing symptoms has not been identified, and there is no confirmation of a positive COVID-19 test, as of yet.
The Jays' decision to close its Dunedin compound comes after word from the Philadelphia Phillies that eight people in that organization have tested positive. Dunedin, which also houses the Jays' Class-A Advanced minor league team, is a short drive from Clearwater, where the Phillies hold spring training.
The state of Florida is currently experiencing a spike in new COVID-19 cases after beginning to reopen businesses and beaches. CBS News reported Friday that despite record-breaking increases of new cases and a report warning that the state could be a new epicentre of cases, the Sunshine State is moving forward with reopening plans.
