Five arrests after disturbance involving hammer, knife

Five Chatham residents are facing assault and weapons charges after Chatham-Kent police were called to a "large disturbance" on Kirk Street in Chatham.

Police said they were called in at around 8 p.m. Monday, adding that all of the people in the group know each other and that a knife and a hammer were involved. Three people suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident, which is still under investigation.

Officers said an 18-year-old Chatham woman, a 22-year-old Chatham woman, and a 27-year-old Chatham man were all arrested and charged with one count of assault.

A 31-year-old Chatham man was charged with one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and one count of uttering threats and a 22-year-old Chatham man was charged with one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of assault.

All of the accused were later released with a future court date.

Spitting leads to assault charge

A 42-year-old man has been charged with assault after he allegedly spat in the face of a woman is in a relationship with.

Police said they were called to the residence in Charing Cross on Monday for a domestic disturbance, adding that the man allegedly spat in the woman's face while officers were present.

Investigators also learned that the man had allegedly previously threatened the woman during their relationship.

The man was arrested, charged with assault and uttering threats and later released pending a future court date.

'Crime of the Week' seeks break-in suspect

Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers are asking for tips that may lead police to the person who broke into Ray’s Mini Mart on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg.

A male suspect reportedly broke the glass front door of the business on June 9 around 3:30 a.m. and used a crowbar to smash the ATM machine inside of the store. The suspect was unable to get the machine's cash box but left approximately $4,000 worth of damages.

The suspect is described as a male, approximately 180-200 pounds and between 5'8" and 6'2". He was last seen wearing light coloured shorts, a hoodie, dark deck shoes, and a black belt.
