Sarnia Black Lives Matter protest planned for Saturday

Hundreds of people are expected to march through downtown Sarnia Saturday, to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Organizer Tabitha Valdez said they're planning for a peaceful demonstration to raise awareness and push for change.

"Come with a positive attitude, an open heart, open mind. If anybody does get aggressive with you, just take a knee or some of the people around you, just keep things peaceful -- we really don't want this getting out of hand, don't disrespect anybody's property -- we really want this message heard, so we need to keep things people."

Valdez said they're asking participants to keep COVID-19 safety measures in mind.

"Everybody needs to be wearing masks. If you don't have a mask, I actually have received a ton of donations of them, so they'll be available outside of city hall. We've had lots of donations of hand sanitizers but feel free to bring your own as well. Respecting physical distancing, keeping six feet apart, just really being mindful of that because we want to keep everyone safe."

Valdez said Sarnia police Chief Norm Hansen reached out to her to talk about Saturday's event.

"It was very supportive. He just discussed how he's going to have a few police officers present, himself included, but he wants to be respectful of the recent events with police brutality and keep the police presence to a minimum."

The rally is set to get underway at 3 p.m. outside Sarnia City Hall.

Valdez said a march is planned down Christina Street to Wellington Street, towards Front Street and back to city hall.

A separate Black Lives Matter rally was held in Sarnia on June 1.
